Abstract The lubrication and friction between mold and strand are the most important factors for strand quality and caster productivity. On the Baosteel continuous casting test platform, the mold friction tests with hydraulic oscillation system were carried out. By measuring the hydraulic forces of cylinders in cold and hot tests with different oscillation parameters, the friction forces between strand and mold were calculated. The periodic variation of mold friction is analyzed, and the change of other related parameters is also discussed. This research provides the experimental basis and technical support for studying the friction between strand and mold and developing new techniques of continuous casting.
