Penetration behavior of molten steel into slot plug used for refining ladles |

Abstract The mechanism of molten steel penetrating into slot plug applied for refining ladle was analyzed, and a mathematical model describing the penetration behavior was established by considering the energy conservation and momentum conservation of the molten metal in the slot. Dynamic behaviors of molten steel penetrating into slot were researched, and the calculated results were compared with experimental data. It is found that the failure of additional pressure against static pressure is the major cause of penetration. Once the penetration occurs, molten metal would rapidly penetrate into the slot plug in short time. During this period, there exists an unsteady penetration stage as the slot length is much larger than the width. Then it reaches the maximum penetration depth. The investigation provides a basis for designing slot plug to prevent from penetration applied for bottom powder injection.
