Abstract��Influence of the Bayer red mud on the reduction of laterite nickel ore was studied by high temperature reduction smelting using avacuum arc furnace, and combining with the metal recovery, microstructure and element distribution. The results show that the addition of Bayer red mud to the laterite nickel ore could greatly increase the metal recovery and reduce the addition of other flux because the slag basicity of the mixtures was effectively improved, which promoted the separation of Fe-Ni alloy from slag. Meanwhile, the chemical composition of the Fe-Ni alloy could be enriched because the Ti element of the Bayer red mud was reduced with the Fe and Ni elements. The Ni and Cr elements were evenly distributed in the ferritic phase, while the Ti element was precipitated by large particles.
