Metallurgy is one of the key foundation industries for national economic development. Currently, state-of-the-art information technologies, including industrial big data, artificial intelligence, etc. are of great importance for economic and social development to meet the intelligentization of metallurgical processes, promote intelligent manufacturing, and boost the transformation and upgrading of the Chinese traditional manufacturing industries. Artificial intelligence (AI) based intelligent manufacturing process, integrating the technologies of advanced manufacturing and the new generation of informatics, is a new opportunity for the further innovation and development of the national metallurgical industry. Meanwhile, frontier technology of materials informatics, e.g. “Materials Genome Engineering”, accelerates the process from material design to its engineering application comprehensively, reduces the time and cost of engineering materials development significantly, and finally contributes to a revolutionary evolution of material development modes.

        To present state-of-the-art research activities on the development and application of AI-based theory and method, the Journal of Iron and Steel Research International plans to organize a topic collection on "Application of AI in steelmaking and ferrous materials" in 2022 (regular issue). Assist. Prof. Wang-zhong Mu from KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Prof. Jie Sun from Northeastern University (China), Prof. Hong-hui Wu from University of Science and Technology Beijing (China), and Assoc. Prof. Shun-hu Zhang from Soochow University (China) are invited to serve as guest editors for this special issue. It is our pleasure to invite you to submit original contributions to this special issue. Articles including but not limited to the following topics are welcome.

• Digital manufacturing

• Metallurgical big data

• Advanced imaging analysis

• Sustainable metallurgy and its digitalization

• Online monitoring of surface defects of iron and steel materials

• Automation control technology of metallurgical process

• Other related theories and technologies related to artificial intelligence metallurgy

Submission of manuscript:

(2) Manuscript should be submitted in a style consistent with the “Instruction for Authors” and “Guide for the Preparation of a Manuscript” of the Journal of Iron and Steel Research International.
