Study and practice for improving macro segregation on350 mm×470mm bloom casting

Abstract:Macro segregation is an important index which can be used to measure bloom quality, and it includes center segregation and middle segregation. Based on bloom casting in Ben Steel, some industrial experiments with different technologies including soft reduction, electromagnetic stirring and secondary cooling etc. were conducted. Then, samples were drilled to test carbon content from experimental bloom and carbon segregation index was calculated. Though analyzing and contrasting, we summarized effect laws for bloom macro segregation. For center segregation, soft reduction can improve center segregation effectively, but the total reductionhas no significant linear relationship with with segregation degree; the stronger secondary cooling, the bigger the center segregation; within acertain range, the increasing M-EMS current can improve center segregation. For middle segregation, soft reduction does not improve intermediate segregation effectively; decreasing M-EMS current can improve middle segregation and narrow segregation index range. After processes adjustment, center segregation index for high carbon steel is below 1.10,and middle segregation index for low carbon steel or mediate carbon steel is between 0.95 and 1.05.
