Abstract Segments are important and key equipments of slab continuous caster, and have a major impact on shape and internal quality defects of the slab. Slab caster maintenance costs and repair cycle are also determined by the normal lifetime of the segment. For the problems exposed by segment, it took Shougang Qiangang more than three years to research technically, management methods of 6σ, PDCA etc. were used, effective measures were taken to make the online lifetime of segment to be increased substantially and slab quality was kept stable. An advanced level for the lifetime of segment has already been reached in the same industry.
