Abstract The formation mechanism of edge cracks on medium plate of 718HL was studied. It’s proved that the cracks are not newly developed but originated primarily from the transversal crack of the inner bow of the slab and the crack are closely related to the uneven cooling of slab. The edge cracks on medium plate can be reduced effectively by the control of accuracy of the key equipments of the continuous caster, so that secondary cooling parameters can be optimized and protective casting enhanced.
