Abstract

Strong fired pellets were produced by simulating gratekiln process to supply highquality charges from some imported manganese ore fines containing high combined water, which was preliminarily pretreated by high press roll grinding. Manganese ore fines assaying 43.09% Mn, 6.49% Fe, and 14.64% LOI, and with 77.81% ranging between 0.5 mm and 8 mm site, are pretreated up to the specific surface areas of 2653 cm2/g and 59.18% passing 0.045 mm by passing the fines through press roller twice in open circuit. The finely ground manganese fines then were mixed with 2.0% bentonite, balled at 16% moisture for 7 min in disc pelletizer, the drop number and compressive strength of green balls reach 23.1 times/0.5 m and 10.20 N per pellet, respectively. After drying in oven, green balls were preheated at 1050 ℃ for 10 minutes and fired at 1340 ℃ for 15 minutes in electric tube furnace, the compressive strength of fired pellets reaches 2711 N per pellet. Therefore, these pellets are high quality burden for blast furnace or electric furnace due to high mechanical strength and high grade of Mn at 49.11% and low detrimental elements.
