Abstract:Nonequilibrium solution of Al in cementite is observed in the course of rapid solidification of spray formed of Alcontaining ultrahighcarbon steel (AlUHCS). The morphology of Alcontaining cementite, owing to its instability, changes rapidly from grainboundarynetwork or pearlite lamella to fine dispersed particles during heating afterwards, giving excellent high temperature plasticity and hotworkability to the steel. For AlUHCS with 1.8 wt% of carbon, the yield strength of 1088 MPa and ultimate tensile strength of 1419 MPa were obtained with fairly good tensile elongation after onepass hotrolling of 70% reduction, due to densified, refined and uniformized structure without grain boundary carbide network.
