Failure analysis of the high power wind generator gear

Abstract:The highspeed intermediate shaft in the gearbox of a high power wind generator produced by a domestic factory cause fracture failure after about 1 000 hours operation. In order to explore the causes of gear failure, the fracture gears were analyzed by macroscopic morphology observation, electron probe morphology analysis, metallographic structure analysis, hardness test, gearsurface temper etch inspection and other analysis. Under the macroscopic inspection, the gear tooth surface is seriously damaged, even some gear teeth are almost completely peeled off near the dedendum from the microscopic observation, the tooth surface still runs for a long time after damage, and there is no obvious fracture feature, but it can be determined as fatigue cracking. The metallographic structure of the damaged area shows obvious abnormal area on the tooth surface. Combining hardness inspection and metallographic examination, it is found that there is obvious abnormality in this area, and the hardness value of the damaged area is obviously low than the design value. There are obvious differences in microstructure between the damaged area and the normal area, and burned zone on the tooth surface can be obvious observed. The results show that the gear fracture is due to the tooth surface temper etch during the grinding process, resulting in the reduction of the contact fatigue strength of the tooth surface, finally leading to the fatigue fracture.
