Abstract:Microstructural characterization was quantitatively carried out for quenched and tempered 17CrNiMo6 martensitic steel by means of optical metallography (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of microstructural features on the strength of the steel was investigated too. Results show that, the packet size and the block width of 17CrNiMo6 steel decrease with the decrease of the prior austenite grain size, while the lath width is about 0.3 μm, which is not evidently dependent on the prior austenite grain size. Although the yield strength of the 17CrNiMo6 steel shows HallPetch type relationship with the prior austenite grain size, martensite packet size, and block width, so block width can be regarded as a microstructural factor controlling the strength of the steel.
