Abstract:In the emerging problems of hearth breakout and short life of some blast furnaces in recent years, the quality of carbon blocks adopted in the blast furnaces was analyzed. The main reason for the short life of the blast furnaces is attributed to the bad quality of the carbon blocks. Hot-pressed small carbon bricks which completely or partly made from electrode graphite as materials are not micro-porous bricks. For some blast furnaces, bad quality micro-porous carbon blocks and semi-graphite carbon blocks were applied. These carbon blocks were produced with backward technologies by adding a large amount of electrode graphite. Therefore, the quality of the carbon blocks is poor.In order to prolong the life of blast furnaces, it is necessary to pay more attention to the quality of carbon blocks. As an useful way for quality inspection, the petrography examination of carbon blocks is strongly recommended.
