Levitation refining of stainless steel by using Ar-CO2 gas mixture

Abstract:The objectives of the present work are focused on reducing the cost of stainless steel production and recycling carbon dioxide in steelmaking process.This paper proposed a method that can removal carbon and sulphur by using levitation refining stainless steel, and analyzed of?the principle of decarburization and desulfurization in the levitation refining of stainless steel melt with kinetic aspects. Results indicated that CO2 can be used to replace O2 in stainless steel refining and[w(C)]can be removed into 0.04% in the condition of the less volatile components. Desulfurization effect was related to sample[w(C),]the higher[w(C),]the better desulfurization effect. The[w(Cr)]of the sample was almost a constant when changed the parameters such as gas flow rate and CO2 partial pressure,which meant using carbon dioxide can levitation refining the stainless steel without significant loss of chromium.
