Abstract:The mechanical properties of an experimental 5NiCrMo steel subjected to a special heat treatment consisting of sequential quenching (Q), intercritical quenching (Q’) and tempering (T) were measured, and the microstructure evolution during QQ’T treatment was systematically studied using optical microscope (OM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). An optimum QQ’T treatment regime for strength and low temperature impact toughness of the steel was subsequently determined.It was demonstrated that a microstructure consisting of mainly fine lathlike martensite with high tempering stability and ferrite impeached by a small amount of precipitated austenite can be obtained in QQ’Ttreatment, which results in improvement in low temperature impact toughness and yield ratio.
