Abstract:The effect of flaking on mechanical properties of wheel steel was investigated. The results show that if the amount of flaking is below a critical value, there is no effect of flaking on tensile properties,but the impact toughness is decreased distinctly. If the density and size of flaking is above the critical value the tensile properties are reduced, but no effect on fracture toughness KIC is obscrued. The flaking do increases and undulates the fatigue crack growth rate.Hydrogen induced delayed cracking has nothing to do with flaking and is attributed to hydrogen atoms.
