Abstract: 50 steel is a kind of medium-carbon high-strength carbon structural steel, and mainly used to manufacture mechanical parts with small dynamic load and impact load and good wear resistance. Aiming at the cracking problem of 50 steel in the process of processing into automobile front axle, a series of physical and chemical property tests, such as chemical composition and metallographic inspection, were conducted for the samples with cracking defects. The analysis results showed that the Widmannstatten structure was produced in the process of heating, which decreased the plasticity and toughness of the sample, leading to the cracking.
