Development Characteristic and Direction of Thin Slab CastingRolling in China
China became the country of largest capacity and output of thin slab castingrolling lines in the world. Now the efforts are put on varieties development, quality improvement, adoption of new technologies such as semiendless rolling, ferrite rolling, cost reduction with domestic supply of refractories and mold powders and other auxiliary materials. In the coming 23 years, there are four aspects for improvement in thin slab casting and rolling in China: (1) production of high quality products and further processed products by whole line of thin slab castingrolling, cold rolling and coating; (2) reaching a higher productivity level with advantages of thin gauge hot rolled products; (3) leading the technology innovation in the field of mold modification, dynamic soft reduction, ferrite rolling and semiendless rolling etc.; (4) independent development of technique, equipment and relevant materials. It is expected that after 23 years, China will lead the technology of thin slab castingrolling in the world in terms of productivity, varieties and quality.

Reason and Control Practice of Hearth Sidewall Erosion of No.2 BF at Baosteel
The reasons of temperature rise of hearth sidewall for several times were analyzed and the operation practice on control of sidewall erosion was summarized for No.2 BF at Baosteel. Results indicate that the sharp circumferential flow of hot metal and slag is the major factor of intensified hearth sidewall erosion. By the measures in operation such as activation of hearth deadman, enhancement of central gas flow, rise of hearth bottom temperature as well as improvement of taphole protection, the problem of hearth wall erosion on No.2 BF was solved successfully. Meanwhile, the effect of adding titanium ore on hearth bottom maintenance is notable, but not obvious for the control of hearth sidewall erosion.

Improvement of Sintering Behaviors of Brazilian Specularite Concentrate by Damp Milling
One type of Brazilian specularite concentrate has poor granulation and sintering properties. However its surface characteristics and sintering capability can be improved through damp milling or mixing with limestone. The mechanism was revealed by measuring wetting heat, changing of size distribution and softening temperature , and so on. The effect of pretreatment was proven through sintering test. Results show that wetting heat of Brazilian specularite is improved resulting in better hydrophilicity and softening temperature of Brazilian specularite is reduced so that its high temperature reaction capability is increased. With pretreatment, the output and quality of sinter are improved greatly, with yield increased by 3.7%, tumbler index raised by 3.33%, solid fuel consumption decreased by about 4 kg/t and utilization rate increased by 22.4%, and sinter quality can meet the requirement of blast furnace operation.

Mineralogical Composition and Microstructure of High Basicity Sinters
Mineralogical composition and microstructure of high basicity sinters of Laisteel, Baosteel, Ansteel, and Jiusteel were investigated by Xray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the high basicity sinter with w(CaO)/w(SiO2)=1.84~2.11 is mainly composed of hematite, magnetite, calcium ferrate, and calcium silicate. The hematite are rhombic and of automorphic crystals and small quantity of allotriomorphic crystals interfaced with calcium ferrite obviously. The magnetite is granular and of allotriomorphic crystals, cementing with calcium ferrite to form corrosion structure. Calcium ferrate is mainly of columnar and acicular form. The β calcium silicate are granular or columnar, between which the columnar or acicular calcium ferrites are existed. In addition, the increase of Al2O3 content in the binding liquid phase of high basicity sinters is useful to promote formation of acicular calcium ferrate.

Inclusions in UltraLow Carbon Steel
Inclusions and total oxygen content in ultralow carbon(ULC) steel were studied for the control of cluster inclusions in ULC steel. Al2O3 and Al2O3TiN are main inclusions in the steel. The size of most individual inclusions is less than 10 μm. When the total oxygen in slab is less than 0.0030%,there still exist cluster Al2O3 inclusions in the steel. The content of cluster Al2O3 inclusions is not in proportion with the total oxygen directly, therefore the content of inclusions in slab is not stood for by total oxygen in the steel totally. The cluster Al2O3 inclusions are related with oxygen activity after RH decarburization. In order to control cluster Al2O3 inclusions in ULC steel, it is necessary to control steelmaking process, including control of oxygen activity after RH decarburization and restriction of RHOB with Al addition for heating.

Study on Role of AcidSoluble Aluminum in AluminumKilled Low Carbon Steel Produced by TSCR
The role of acidsoluble aluminum in aluminumkilled low carbon steel produced by TSCR is discussed. The results show that the acidsoluble aluminum has no distinct effect on the grain size and mechanical property of aluminumkilled low carbon steel plates produced by TSCR whose acidsoluble aluminum content is 0.005%0043%, but acidsoluble aluminum has obvious effect on the grain size of aluminumkilled low carbon steel plates produced by TSCR when reheated. The grain coarsening temperature is increased with the acidsoluble aluminum content. So it is concluded that the acidsoluble aluminum content can be controlled to about 0.01% to these steels which do not need to emphasize welding property, but to those steels which need to insist welding property and other special properties the acidsoluble aluminum content should be controlled to 0.02%0.04%.

Theory and Practice of Desulphurization of Hot Metal in Ladle by Using Double Injection Lance
The methods and key process problems of hot metal desulphurization with Mgbased reagents are discussed in detail, according to thermodynamics and kinetics and combining with hot metal desulphurization technology at Baosteel. The desulphurization efficiency are influenced greatly by reagent injection rate, lance position, lance design, temperature and etc. The problems are brought forward. The methods are given to solve these problems. Most of injected magnesium are vaporized and oxidized, only a small part of magnesium is used to desulphurize hot metal. At same time, the properties of desulphurization slag are deteriorated by formation of MgO.

Evolution of JetBOxTM System for EAF
Invented by PTI, Inc. the patented JetBOxTM supersonic oxygen injection system has proven to be an effective tool in increasing Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) production at the same time reducing conversion costs of the EAF. This effect has been achieved by developing for each individual melt shop a unique, efficient method of chemical energy introduction. As each system installation was optimized, the JetBOxTM system evolved to meet the different demands of each melt shop. The JetBOxTM system has been installed in EAF’s utilizing batch scrap charging, ConsteelTM process, DRI and hot metal operations with equally good results. Since 2001 JetBOxTM systems efficiently and safely operate at over 60 different steel facilities meeting the challenge presented at each individual mill.

Surface Crack of Niobium Microalloyed HotRolled Ribbed Bar
The surface cracks of niobium microalloyed hotrolled ribbed bars and the continuously cast billets were studied respectively by means of using metallographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy spectrum analysis. Results indicate that the continuous casting billets have serious defects such as centre porosity, interal cracks and centre cracks, caused by the combined effects of improper casting temperature, cooling intensity, casting speed and so on. On surface of bars there were the longitudinal cracks caused by inclusions on the outer layer, especially the subouter layer of bars, but not the interal cracks in billets. The effect of inclusions on the growth and branching of longitudinal cracks were discussed. The large inclusions with poor deformability could easily lead to branching of cracks during propagation. Based on the above conclusions, the relative precautions including optimization of steel refining and improvement of continuous casting parameters were offered and good effect was obtained.

AGC System With Adaptive Threshold Method of Wavelet Transform
To solve some problems of conventional GMAGC system, a new AGC system based on adaptive threshold method of wavelet transform was developed with characteristic of time domain and frequency domain localization of multiscale wavelet transform analysis. The new system can selfadaptively, rationally confirm the number and thresholds of decomposed layers of wavelet, selfadaptively extract the change in rolling force for GMAGC adjustment, and selfadaptively identify the signals of roll eccentricity to accurately compensate roll eccentricity. This system has the properties of selfadaption, strong robustness, simple algorithm and high control accuracy. Experiments show that the new system greatly improves the thickness accuracy of strip and is worthy of promotion.

Intelligent Rolling Force Prediction Model With Elongation Distribution Function
According to the characteristics of twostand temper mill, a rolling force model with elongation distribution calculation function was established on the criterion that the best shape of strip is obtained under the base bending force. Moreover, in order to improve the prediction precision of rolling load, a new approach was proposed in which deformation resistance and friction coefficient are first predicted by neural network on measured data, then rolling force is predicted by combining above parameters with the selfadaption process of rolling force model. The new model was applied on 1220 twostand temper mill at Baosteel, proving that the rolling force on temper mill can be predicted with high precision.

Experiment of Producing HRB400III Steel With Si3N4 Alloy
HRB400 is a kind of high strength hot rolled reinforced bar emphatically promoted by the national policy of steel industry. Three experimental schemes were executed to validate the feasibility of producing the Vbearing HRB400 bar with Si3N4 alloy as nitrogen alloy reagent. Results show that 0.5 kg/t VN can be replaced by 0.5 kg/t Si3N4 and 0.6 kg/t FeV for alloying to obtain rational V/N ratio and stable properties of reinforced bars. Thus a new alloying technology for nitrogen addition is to be emerged.

Evolution of Cold Rolling and Annealing Textures in Nonoriented Electrical Steel
An overall study of hot rolling texture and the evolution of cold rolling and recrystallization textures in 50W600 electrical steels were conducted by orientation distribution function analysis and experiments on cold rolling and annealing. Results show that the hot band presents almost random texture and the intensity of αfibre texture is weak. With increasing cold rolling deformation rate the intensity of αfibre texture is increased, the intensity of {001}<110> and {112}<110> are 12 and 14 respectively at the cold reduction rate of 81%. With increasing annealing temperature and holding time the intensity of αfibre texture is weakened and the intensity of {001}<110> and {112}<110> is greatly decreased but the {111}<112> of γ fibre texture is significantly increased, presenting that most of grains are oriented along γfibre texture. It’s favorable to develop the cold rolled nonoriented electrical steels with strong {100} texture by controlling the parameters of cold rolling and annealing.

NanoScaled Precipitates in Low Carbon High Strengh Steel With Microalloyed Ti Produced by CSP
Using chemical phase analysis and high resolution TEM analysis, HSLC steel with microalloyed Ti produced by CSP was studied. It was found that the amount of nanoscaled MC particles is less than that of nanoscaled M3C particles by two orders of magnitude. For example the amount of M3C particles less than 18 nm in size was 0024% but that of MC is only 00009%. NanoScaled precipitates can be divided into three types: type 1 containing Ti, Fe, C, N, O, type 2 containing Fe, C, O, and type 3 containing Fe, O only.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of High Manganese Austenite TRIP/TWIP Steels
The microstructure and mechanical properties of two high manganese austenite steels during tensile tests at roomtemperature were studied. The results indicate that the steels exhibit transformation induced plasticity(TRIP) and twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) under flow stress. At the initial strain rate of 10-3 s-1, the tensile strengths of 23.8% Mn and 33% Mn samples were 666 MPa and 540 MPa and their elongations were 67% and 97% respectively. In the range of initial strain rate of 10-310-1 s-1, nearly no strain rate sensitivity to flow stress in tensile test was observed, but such sensitivity was observed in plasticity. The steel, can be taken as the new generation highstrength and highplasticity automobile steel due to the better integrated mechanical properties.
