Abstract:High speed casting process for efficient production is ever a challenge to the technology development, which can lead to direct rolling due to the high temperature billet casting obtained upon cutting. Based on the original 170mm 170mm billet caster of a steel plant, the technology revamping on this caster machine has been carried out to increase its casting speed, in which a multi-taper mold, non-sinusoidal vibration system, mold powder optimization, secondary cooling optimization and other technical measures have been adopted together. Production practice showed that this revamping activity satisfactorily meet the expected target on casting speed with 50% higher, together with strand throughput around 35 ton per hour reached. The overall metallurgical effect after the high speed revamping has been reviewed in the paper. It has been also pointed out that, for quality casting production, higher demands are required for the design of both casting machine and the operation parameters to match the high speed casting process.
